Hello everyone, its Janet Roach here. International tea master, proud mother, mad dog-lover and today, I want to talk to you about gaining weight, as we get older.

It’s an age-old complaint that when you get older, your metabolism slows and it’s much harder to keep the pounds from piling on. You’re doing the same amount of exercise, eating the same healthy meals and often saying ‘no’ to treats offered to you. But there’s nothing you can do. You can’t lose the weight!

It’s easy to look back on your younger self and think ‘how did I ever look like this and how can I get back to having that figure?’

Well, after doing some research into this topic, I’ve found that scientifically, yes, it is harder to lose weight as you age. What if I had an easy way to lose weight quickly and keep it off? We all have times in our lives when we want to look our best. I was just told that the reality television show I am a cast member of, The Real Housewives of Melbourne is starting filming soon. With this news under my belt I have decided to start the Slim Tea Challenge myself. I will be sharing my progress with you.

Ok so, getting back onto the topic age and weight gain: new research from the Karolinska Institute has shown that lipid turnover in fat tissue decreases during ageing. This basically means that the rate at which fat in fat cells is removed and stored will inevitably slow with time. After analysing fat cells in 54 men and women over 13 years, they discovered that the lipid turnover in the fat tissue had decreased in every single participant, regardless of whether they had seen any change in their weight. This means that for those who didn’t compensate for this by consuming fewer calories, gained weight by 20% on average. Now we all know the basics for weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. We need to eat fewer calories than we expend in order to lose those love handles. So that’s definitely one way we have to be very strict with ourselves as we get older in order to stay slim and to continue to be healthy. This can mean, for some of us, that we end up cutting our calories so much so that we end up feeling absolutely miserable.

Now, not only does your lipid turnaround slow as you age, but your body’s production of hormones that help maintain muscle mass begins to decrease, as well as an inevitable slowing of your metabolism. Every decade past 40, your metabolism slows by about 5%, which to me seems pretty scary. Your lifestyle can often become more sedentary, stress levels may have increased and in turn, sleep might be more difficult as the years go on. All of this means it’s much easier for your body to latch onto fat.

Here are a few working tips that you can do right now to begin to combat weight gain:

Firstly, I would recommend incorporating weight training into your fitness routine. Muscle burns fat, and so, the more muscle you have, the easier it is for your body to burn off excess calories. Not only this but exercising using weights can give you a great calorie burn in itself!

Secondly, include more protein in your diet. Eating a diet rich in lean protein sources provide the right amino acids as the building blocks to synthesise muscle, so getting these into every meal to help you feel fuller for longer is key.

Thirdly, and this is probably one you don’t usually think about, but getting enough quality sleep is also key to weight loss or maintaining your weight. Sleep is a time for repair to your body and for the regulation of your hormones. Too little sleep triggers a cortisol spike, which tells your body to conserve energy to fuel you when you’re awake. This slows your metabolism and means your body grabs on to any fat it has. So get some good sleep in!
