Jake & Janet: Mother’s Day Edition Part II

CELEBRATION OF MOTHERHOOD

Not many kids can say that their mum saved their life and mine did just that. When an accident left me with 3rd degree burns to 70% of my body and low chances of survival my Mum did everything to ensure that I not only lived, but thrived.

She would visit me in hospital every single day and make sure everything that needed to be done was done. Truth be told she would do a lot of the work herself. She ensured my diet was on point and that I wasn’t eating hospital food because let’s face it, it doesn’t do anyone any favours. She was practically like another nurse, yet so much more as she never took a sick day and didn’t leave my side until I got out of hospital.

One time I had glandular fever, had lost 10kgs and was sleeping 22 hours a day for four weeks. Mum would wake me up with some foul green concoction and made me drink it. She had me back to full health in no time at all.

I remember my childhood fondly. My mum wanted my brother, Paul and I to have amazing experiences and I’m so grateful. We where lucky enough to visit Disneyland in LA when we where little kids. As a massive fan of snow trips, I was privileged enough to have a flat at Mt Buller.

DESPITE WHAT PEOPLE MIGHT SEE ON TV, MY MUM IS REALLY EAST GOING. SHE LIKES TO GO WITH THE FLOW AND CHILL IN HER GARDEN AND SPEND TIME WITH THE DOGS

She was always super gutsy and took us on heaps of trips to all kinds of places such as Mexico, Bali, Vanuatu and Thailand just to name a few.

Ever since I was about 16 she has been more of a friend then a mother which gave me confidence to tell her anything without the thought of being punished. It meant that I could relate to her less as a child and as an adult instead which has definitely made our relationships open and honest.

While she can appear to be intimidating at first, she can talk to anyone anywhere and makes other people feel completely comfortable around her. If I like someone, she trusts my judgement of their character and more often than not will extend the hand of friendship to them also.

This has been a blessing because she likes every girlfriend I have had which makes dating a lot easier. And life in general.

I love you mum, Happy Mother’s Day!
